Scammers Use AI to Create Fake Websites and Social Media Profiles
Cado Security Labs has uncovered a sophisticated scam targeting Web3 professionals, where scammers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake websites and social media profiles designed to deceive their victims. These AI-generated sites closely mimic legitimate business platforms, often associated with blockchain and cryptocurrency, making it difficult for users to detect the fraud. The scammers replicate trusted business environments, enhancing the credibility of their fake platforms and convincing Web3 professionals to engage with them. As AI technology becomes more advanced, it enables scammers to create highly convincing fake content that is almost indistinguishable from real websites.
Malicious “Meeten” and “Meetio” Apps Steal Sensitive Data
Once the scammers establish contact, they prompt their victims to download a seemingly innocuous meeting app called “Meeten” or “Meetio.” However, these apps are far from harmless. Upon installation, they deploy malware on the victim’s device, which then scans for sensitive information, including cryptocurrency wallet credentials, Telegram logins, and banking details. Additionally, the malware collects browser cookies and autofill information, putting the victim’s personal data at significant risk. The consequence of this malicious activity is far-reaching, as it exposes the victim to financial theft, identity fraud, and further cyberattacks.
Web3 Professionals Advised to Be Cautious of Unsolicited Software Downloads
Experts are advising Web3 professionals to exercise extreme caution when encountering unsolicited software downloads, especially those associated with business meetings or job opportunities. The scammers have become increasingly sophisticated, using AI technology to create highly convincing fake platforms and applications. To protect themselves, Web3 professionals should verify the legitimacy of any business platform or app before downloading, ensuring they aren’t falling victim to these AI-powered scams. Vigilance and skepticism are now essential for protecting personal and financial data in an increasingly digital and connected world.
